As the world’s best aerial and mogul athletes take to Deer Valley Resort’s slopes for the 2016 FIS Visa Freestyle International Ski World Cup February 4-6, 2016, Deer Valley Resort will pay special homage to the late Director of Skiing and legend, Stein Eriksen, who passed away last month at the age of 88 (view obituary).
The Stein Eriksen Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday, February 4, in conjunction with the Freestyle World Cup aerial competition. Deer Valley will commemorate Eriksen’s three gold medals at the 1954 World Championships in Åre, Sweden by contributing $54 of each lift ticket sold that day to the Stein Eriksen YSA Opportunity Endowment. Stein’s most significant collaboration with the Youth Sports Alliance was launching the Stein Eriksen YSA Opportunity Endowment. When complete, it will provide financial support in the form of scholarships for young and aspiring athletes to participate, and possibly excel, in any of the winter sports programs offered under the YSA umbrella. The Endowment also provides scholarships for YSA’s after-school Get Out & Play program, which enables children of economically-challenged families to experience programs ranging from skating to luge to alpine skiing with equipment, instruction, and transportation included. Over the past 21 months, Stein helped raise more than $1.6 million to fund the Endowment.
In addition to raising money to help complete Stein’s Legacy to Park City, a commemorative pin will be available at resort ticket offices for each ticket holder and daytime World Cup event attendee. Some of Stein’s favorite Norwegian foods will be served at resort restaurants throughout the day, including house-cured gravlax, housemade venison meatballs, Marzipan Cake and special availability of Aquavit in the EBS Lounge at Snow Park and Royal Street Café. Photo opportunities will also be available around the mountain including Stein’s Way ski run, the Stein Eriksen Statue in front of Snow Park Lodge, and the torch located adjacent to the snow entrance of Stein Eriksen Lodge at the top of Viking chairlift.
If you have a special Stein Eriksen story, please share it on the event’s Facebook page.
