2014 in the Rear View Mirror

Dare to Dream Scholarships Awarded

Youth Sports Alliance awarded scholarships to 48 competitive athletes and 120 elementary students participating in the YSA Get Out & Play Program. The funding is raised at the annual JANS Winter Welcome gala event and is awarded twice each year. In October, athletes apply for awards to help with registration fees and training. Scholarships awarded in March are granted to athletes qualifying for National and International Competitions. Get Out & Play Scholarships are awarded for each of the four sessions.

A Legacy of Opportunity with Stein Eriksen

During Park City’s Olympic Parade and Celebration weekend last April, YSA launched the Stein Eriksen YSA Opportunity Endowment. Founders set the bar high aiming to raise $2 million dollars over two years to fund a legacy of opportunity to Park City’s youth athletes. In just over six-months into the campaign, the fund broke the $1 million mark through donations at JANS Winter Welcome. The Youth Sports Alliance partnered with the Park City Community Foundation to invest Stein Eriksen YSA Opportunity Endowment funds. This relationship ensures a strong and stable future for the endowment.

34th JANS Winter Welcome

The event moved this year from its beloved location at Deer Valley’s Silver Lake Lodge to the Stein Eriksen Lodge. The venue change allowed this perennial sell-out to include more backers, all of whom showed up ready to continue to provide opportunities to our local kids. Thank you Park City for believing in the dreams of our youth!

Grants to Winter Sports Teams

YSA announced $45,000 in grant awards to its affiliated Winter Sports Teams. As winter sports teams prepare for the 2014-15 Competitive Season, these resources will provide crucial funding needed to provide a safe, fun, and competitive environment for our kids. Some of the awards include B-netting for safety around an alpine ski racing course, clinics for figure skaters to hone their skills with National rated coaching, and technology to improve the teaching tools for coaches.

Deer Valley joins Get Out & Play

Get Out & Play expanded its partnership to all three local ski resorts in Park City when it brought its popular after school learn-to-ski program to Deer Valley. The program, piloted by Jeremy Ranch Elementary School in early 2014 was a great success. This year the Deer Valley GO&P Ski program is open to all Park City School District Elementary Schools.

Circle of Excellence

Newpark Amphitheatre played host to the 2014 Circle of Excellence Awards, the concert and awards ceremony honoring top youth winter sports athletes. This year, more than 80 athletes, representing the top 5% of their winter sports teams, received medals honoring their accomplishments. Athletes were also recognized for show-stopping moments and leadership. Local favorite, Patwa, played the concert. Olympians Joss Christensen and Megan McJames presented the awards and were inducted into the Youth Sports Alliance Hall of Fame.

YSA Leadership Award Trip

Leadership Award nominees from various YSA member teams joined by 4-time Olympian, Catherine Rainey Norman, took a trip to Bear Lake on Chubby, the Seaplane. Athletes were nominated by their teams for the Leadership Award or had the chance to be nominated by selling the most tickets for the JANS Winter Welcome Opportunity Drawing, benefitting their team.

Epic Promise supports Youth Sports Alliance

Vail Resorts, through its Epic Promise Program, announced a grant to support YSA programming including the Stein Eriksen Endowment Opportunity Fund and Get Out & Play Programs. Vail supports its community partners across the country with donations valued in excess of $6.5 million annually.

Sunrise Rotary awards grant funds to YSA

Park City’s Sunrise Rotary supported YSA’s Get Out & Play Program. Over the past several years, YSA partner venues have maintained their pricing structure, while transportation costs have increased by 25% and 12% in the past two years respectively. The Sunrise Rotary Grant will allow YSA to hold the line on price increases to keep this program affordable to all families in Park City.

Park City on Parade

Park City sent a record 64 athletes to the Sochi Olympics, including 18 alumni of Youth Sports Alliance teams. Their medal haul included twelve medals. Homegrown Park-ites – Joss Christensen, Steve Holcomb, Sage Kotsenburg and Ted Ligety – brought home 3 Gold medals and 2 Bronze. Park City, if counted as a country, placed 9th in the medal standings, tied with France, Austria and Poland. YSA celebrated the success of Park-ites, by holding a parade down Main Street attended by thousands of fans.

Looking forward to many more #ysadreams in 2015!
